Day - 706

Sunday, January 30, 2022

With no other NFL team to root for, I tried something new and rooted for the 49ers against the Rams Sunday afternoon. They were ahead by 10 going into the 4th quarter, but when strong safety Jaquiski Tartt dropped an interception that was thrown right in his hands. From then on, it was doomsday for the 9ers. Game over. Rams play the Bengals in the Super Bowl.

Read some James Baldwin afterward.

Day - 707

Saturday, January 29, 2022

Finished the final details of the downstairs unit and the Airbnb is back up and running.

We went for a short ride along Upper Great Highway in the afternoon. A sunny, somewhat warm day to read and relax.

Day - 708

 Friday, January 28, 2022

In SF today to help get the Airbnb ready. Sunny outside. We had lunch in the back and someone was eyeing my dessert!

Day - 709

Thursday, January 27, 2022

Racquetball has been quiet this month with most guys not showing up at the club. I've been going regularly Tuesday and Thursday.

Fallen behind on the 30 day challenge at Poker Coaching. Need to step it up.

Bonnie and Evka invited me for dessert. Crepes and ice cream. So good!

Day - 710

Wednesday, January 26, 2022

Oh wow, one of the funniest SNL skits I've ever seen. Hilarious!

Day - 711

Tuesday, January 25, 2022

Haven't played bridge in many many months and must take time to get back into it. It's so good for my brain. Still expanding my poker knowledge. Poker is beginning to feel like the universe, expanding at the speed of light to distance space far removed from my consciousness.

Pulled out this book to get back into it:

Day - 712

 Monday, January 24, 2022

Worked downstairs today with a foldup table that nicely holds the sit/stand desk. Dorian, Khaled and I are ironing out details for a joint video podcast we're starting up. The topic is race/racism and it's a freewheeling conversation that we'll  try out for a few sessions to see how it feels. The three of us come at race from such different perspectives that it promises to be lots of fun and engaging. We'll see where it goes.

Day - 714

Saturday, January 22, 2022

Wow, what a couple of playoff games today. I missed most of the first game between the Bengals and Titans, but watched the final few minutes. Bengals look good!

Then came the big upset, the 49ers at Green Bay. How in the world did the 9ers do it?  Almost turned me into a fan. I like Green Bay, but watching the underdogs take care of business was certainly a sight to behold.

Day - 713

Sunday, January 23, 2022

Two more amazing games were played today, the Rams vs Bucs came down to the wire, even though the Rams led by three scores throughout most of the game. It's Cooper Kupp's world this year.

Then came the Bills vs. Chiefs with the Chiefs scoring a field goal with 13 seconds left, then scoring a touchdown in overtime to win it. I was rooting for the Bills, but wow!

Day - 715

Friday, January 21, 2022

There's a term I've been kicking around lately: Baseline Awareness. I use this term when thinking about race from my white male perspective. Had I measured my awareness of race back in 1995, I might have imagined a middle range, even though it was quite low. Now, many years later, my awareness is much deeper and more pronounced, but still I'm unable to fully absorb what Ron Davis calls the daily relentlessness of racism that people of color must confront in the U.S. I know it's there, but I'll never see or feel it. I can acknowledge it though, but too many white people don't acknowledge any relentlessness at all.

Day - 716

The Breakdown tonight:

Chatting with the Petty family at 7.

Day - 717

Wednesday, January 19, 2022

Great article about poker in the New York Times Magazine. All about game theory optimal strategies and who's most mirroring the super computers.

Day - 718

Tuesday, January 18, 2022

Dinner with Lisa and Margaret at Shakewell. Tim the owner sat with us for a good 30 minutes. Such a fun, delightful person, always up, always looking at the bright side of things. Good food and even better company!

Day - 719

Monday, January 17, 2022

I was wondering what was happening in the Matt Gaetz investigation. Is this guy ever getting indicted?  Losing patience.

Day - 720

Sunday, January 16, 2022

Sunday afternoon at Lillian and William's house with Alice's family. A wonderful afternoon, topped off with a soak in the hot tub in the evening (a perfect conclusion to a fabulous day!).

Day - 721

Saturday, January 15, 2022

More cleaning and preparing the Airbnb for guests. Me with my new Twitter jacket.

Day - 722

Friday, January 14, 2022

Spent the evening with Richard and Rossana. We grabbed some sushi at Mijori and hung out in the Young back yard with the heaters blasting away. So nice! Got my Christmas gift from the Youngs, a wonderful white fleece Twitter jacket...so warm and cozy.  Love it!

Day - 723

Thursday, January 13, 2022

Making good headway in an amazing history book!

Day - 724

Wednesday, January 12, 2022

Market concerns. Could be a choppy few months (or entire year).

Day - 725

Tuesday, January 11, 2022

I've fallen behind in the Poker Coaching 30-day Poker challenge, but hope to catch up in the next week or so. Too busy with work, reading, and taking care of an endless list of things to do.

Day - 726

Monday, January 10, 2022

Doing a little research on my family history, learning about my great-great grandfather on my dad's mom's side, Alexander Acheson and his family.

This is a pic of my great-great grandfather Alexander Acheson and his three siblings, Weir, Samuel and either Elizabeth or Arabella

This is a pic of my great-great grandparents and their first four children, Joseph, Mary, Sarah, and Weir. Sarah in the middle is my great-grandmother. She looks so much like Jill!

Day - 727

Sunday, January 9, 2022

Mom's birthday!

And Fantasy Football Championship. My team did not disappoint!  Victory for the first time in four years. 303 to 229. I had several MVP players on one of the best post-season teams I've ever owned.  MVP is Cooper Kupp for sure.

Day - 728

Saturday, January 8, 2022

We tackled the garage today, cleaning out cupboards and drawers, throwing away piles of papers, rearranging shelves, etc. A full day of cleaning in preparation for the new Airbnb season.

Day - 729

Friday, January 7, 2022

Busy at work. Reading later, but for some reason, I sent down a YouTube tornado tunnel...

Day - 730

Thursday, January 6, 2022

Catching up on this:

I've been waiting for years for eventual new pictures of the universe from the James Webb Telescope that launched last month. It's gotta be one of the most exciting scientific events of all time. I can't wait for this summer and the new pictures that come back of the earliest galaxies from the time of the big bang. This amazing time machine is one of the greatest creations of human beings.

Met Margaret for coffee today at Starbuck's but the shop was closing at 3. I ordered just in time. They were closing because there was no one scheduled to work in the afternoon. This may become a thing, stores and businesses unable to hire enough staff to operate the store. Sign of things to come?

Day - 731

Wednesday, January 5, 2022

The day began with a strong Wednesday morning meeting at 6 a.m. with the guys. This will be a good year to share a few ideas I've been kicking around regarding race and racism from a white male perspective. I'm developing a language that I use over and over. The word "awareness" is a meaningful word to me. It's neutral yet captures a range of knowledge. When I look at the documentary, I was part of back in 1995, I'm looking at my baseline awareness of race in America. I'm looking at a nice, well-intentioned white male who doesn't have all that much to say about race, but has seen every Spike Lee film through 1995, read several books about race and watched Roots as a middle schooler. Other than that, not so much to say, compared to who I am today.  I have plenty to say. Plenty. Society has my back; law enforcement has my back.  I say that all the time. I'm stringing together these pithy, punchy lines of truth that I plan to use like electric jolts. Go back to your past so you can understand today. That's another one. The North fought a Civil War to abolish slavery, but had no problem whatsoever with white supremacy. That's another one. After the Civil War, white supremacy was the ointment that healed the nation, at the expense of black dignity. More coming this year.

My neighbor Bonnie has a new roommate, Evka from the former Yugoslavia.  I had breakfast at their house. So nice!

Day - 732

Tuesday, January 4, 2022

Okay, so I'm looking over finances and need to generate an action plan to prepare for inevitable decline this year.  Wait, didn't I say that last year?  The market can't go any higher, right? I mean, it just can't...right? Hmmm...

Day - 733

Monday, January 3, 2021

Quiet today at work, which allowed time to read.  Reading this:

Day - 734

Sunday, January 2, 2022

Painted an area behind the couch in the airbnb and restored the couch legs. Couch is back in position; TV is back in position. The new floor looks good. Watched a couple of football games and my fantasy team handily defeated Steve's Manganese 276-162.

Day - 735

Saturday, January 1, 2022

A very quiet new year filled with house duties and fix-ups. We're getting the airbnb back up and running. Alice's February calendar is nearly full with guests. This feels like an important year in many ways. Will good triumph over evil? Will democracy prevail? Will diversity win out over caste and white supremacy? Will the pandemic rage on, disrupting everything? Will the markets correct themselves, or will they continue to go up up up, regardless of reality? Hard to say at the moment. I'm hopeful though.
