Day - 885

Saturday, July 24, 2021

Saturday morning at Home Depot to pick up fertilizer and soil for the garden. We then spent the rest of the day at home, taking care of small chores. I made cowboy cookies for tomorrow's trip to Olympia.

Day - 886

Friday, July 23, 2021

Very quiet day at work. Miles and I played cribbage at Peets during lunch...picked up a few slices of Arizmendi pizza. Richard joined us for a bit.

The afternoon was mellow. Played 3 hours at the Oaks, up $105. AK twice, QQ once, A5s once. Raised with JT suited but was re-raised out of the pot with two AKs. Would have won that one but the fold was proper. Lots of readable players at the low limit Oaks tables. And lots of players who are making many fundamental errors. One big error is not betting big enough with the nuts. I see many players bet small when they have the best hand, fearing a fold from opponents. Not sure that's good in some spots. I'm winning small pots, not so much big pots yet.

Day - 887

Thursday, July 22, 2021

Racquetball from 6-7:30, then a solid day of work while studying a few post-flop concepts. Petty Zoom tonight so no Oaks action. I'll play tomorrow night.

Read another chapter of How the Word is Passed. This books' packed with quotes, history, the American experience. Really good.

Day - 888

Wednesday, July 21, 2021

I saw this sports documentary at the Grand Lake Theater with Dorian. It was powerful. There are endless stories about racism, oppression, denying the rights of people of color, especially in my parents' generation and my generation. Dorian is a case study of a gifted athlete who was marginalized and cut out of so many opportunities because of his race. Watching this together was very powerful.

So many stories stood out, but listening to the stories of long distance runner Billy Mills and golfer Bill Wright really hit home. Very powerful evening. So glad I was able to share it with D.

Day - 889

Tuesday, July 20, 2021

Got to play some cribbage with Miles and Maddy at Peets today while working online. They're hanging out in the hood the next few weeks, enjoying their summer between graduation and entering adult life with full-time jobs, monthly bills, etc. I love these two and especially love how much they enjoy playing crib. We played a couple three-handed games, then I let them play together while taking care of some emails and small jobs.

After work, I studied a few poker scenarios. Hope to play Thursday and Friday night.

Day - 890

Monday, July 19, 2021

PowerPoint took most of the morning, then smaller jobs took most of the afternoon. No time to study.

Day - 891

Sunday, July 18, 2021

Spent the day catching up on this journal. I'd gotten behind and needed to catch up.

Day - 892

Saturday, July 17, 2021

Spent the afternoon in Oakland at Howard and Leslie's with Alice, Dorian and Debbie, and Howard's brother Michael and his wife Tina. Great afternoon hanging out with friends. Made cowboy cookies and banana bread for dessert.

Day - 893

Friday, July 16, 2021

Made cowboy cookies for tomorrow's party at Howards. Busy day at work, but all caught up. Continued studying.

Day - 894

Thursday, July 15, 2021

Another session at the Oaks and still card dead. Had an unlucky hand with AK suited, A57 flop, 6 turn, 5 on river. Opp had J5 and made a sizable bet on the river that I called. Did hit a set at one point for a nice pot, but other than that, my luck was not with me tonight.

Day - 895

Wednesday, July 14, 2021

Played for 4.5 hours at the Oaks tonight. Card dead and whatever hands I had were smashed by inferior hands that caught up on the river.

Day - 896

Tuesday, July 13, 2021

Dinner with Ron and Jeni tonight at Osha Thai at Embarcadero. Great catching up with them!

Day - 897

Monday, July 12, 2021

Back at work, and I had tons to take care of. But I also had the last 75 pages to read before 4 p.m.

Luckily, I was able to finish just before our book club started at 4.

Reyna Grande, the author of The Distance Between Us, joined us for the book club discussion. She was wonderful. What a marvelous writer and person. I so enjoyed listening to her share her story of immigrating to the US from Mexico. I thought a lot about my own immigration story from Canada while reading her book. Needless to say, her struggles were so much more intense and dangerous than mine. Great book and book club!

Day - 898

Sunday, July 11, 2021

Still tired, but I had a book to read for tomorrow's book club at work.

Day - 899

Saturday, July 10, 2021

Up at 6:30 and off to the airport by 8:15 for my 9:45 flight home. The flight was full and delayed, but eventually I made it back to Oakland safe and sound.

Once I was home, I went to sleep. And slept the entire day.

Day - 900

Friday, July 9, 2021

Our last day in Las Vegas. We met up with Kevin at Bellagio and played an early afternoon session until 4:30. I won my first hand with JT against KK, making a fullhouse, and road the win through the session, up $120.

Happy birthday to our poker buddy Steve!

Back at Bellagio with Kevin

Dinner at Majordomo, a David Chang restaurant in the Venetian. It was fantastic and the perfect way to conclude our amazing poker week in Las Vegas.

Broadbent ham

Bing bread and my cocktail

This was amazing - Crispy Short Rib & Potatoes

Crab mafaldine

Awesome mashed potatoes

This was also incredible - smoked prime rib

The major mess - peaches, meringue, so good!

major gone

Our last night of poker with Steve and John

We closed the place down one last time. My cards were really hot the last hour or so. Up $500.

Day - 901

Thursday, July 8, 2021

Thursday ended up being a very good poker day. We played at the Wynn, Resorts World, and Venetian. I won at all three poker rooms. At the Wynn, I got lucky, catching a flush after going all in for +$300. At Resorts World, I had AA against KK and a drawing hand, making $400. And at the Venetian, I was up $240.

Dinner was at a beer tasting bar

Everything was good

Thom went to bed early tonight, but I stayed up until 3 a.m. with these two characters, Steve and Mike. Lots of fun at this table!

Day - 902

Wednesday, July 7, 2021

Today, we moved it to the Palazzo, sister casino of the Venetian.

Thom played in a deep stack tournament, so I had the day to myself. I wandered around the Venetian and Wynn, then headed to Resorts World to check out the new poker room and get a player's card.

This casino is very nice. Big spaces. Beautiful.

The food court features more than 40 different places to get a bite to eat. Many are Asian specialties that look so interesting and probably taste really good.

I went to Nori Bar and ate a couple of sushi rolls. Very good.

After lunch, I played a couple hours of poker at Resorts World, making $160.

I headed back to the room at Palazzo and took a nice long nap. The hotel presented VIP Thom with a bottle of champagne.

Kevin's favorite slot machine is Buffalo. I don't have a favorite slot machine. Slot machines are so dumb.

Day - 903

Tuesday, July 6, 2021

Kevin joined the Las Vegas fun Tuesday. We played at Bellagio most of the day and had dinner at Noodles in our room. The place is packed.

Starting stack

Moving up!

Kevin in a hand

Wonton noodles at Noodles...very good

Net positive for the day.
