Day 1686

Saturday, August 26, 2017

We had breakfast at the same place at 6 a.m.  When had made the decision to participate in everything today and promised to behave herself.  She was told she wasn't allowed to say anything negative about Mathew, Greg or anyone else and she agreed she would be fine.  And she was.  The day went off without a hitch.

After breakfast, we all drove about ten miles away to an apartment where priests chanted and asked the ancestors to bless the wedding party.  The event was full of ritual, incense, offerings, chats, and an Indian meal afterward on a banana leaf.

After the ceremony, the women had their hands painted while I went to my room to nap.

I was only planning to sleep for an hour, but I ended up sleeping three hours and woke up just in time for Mathew's procession by horse to meet his future father-in-law.  The ceremony took place in the Hilton parking lot and features drums, chants, songs and people dancing around Mathew.  It was definitely a spectacle but lots of fun.  We circles the hotel for 30 minutes, then made our way back inside for another ceremony in one of the Hilton meeting rooms.

Next came a 90-minute ceremony featuring the two families together with the priests and music in a colorful setting.  After the ceremony, we had dinner, then played a few dance games before I cut out for bed.  I was so tired by the end of the day, but only slept for a few hours before waking up again at 2 a.m.  Jet lag is awful.
