Watched Bill Maher on Ben Shapiro's show. Bill said something that I've been thinking about: "I live in the present, not the past." He was referring to race and perhaps slavery. Hmm. But what about the heavy-duty messaging that accompanied 240 years of slavery. It takes so pretty powerful belief system to get white people to buy into the notion that black people are not people but property. All that messaging stayed with us after the Civil War and is with us today. Wasn't it Faulkner who said "The past is never dead. It's not even past."
