Racquetball doubles league tonight. Super sore afterward. I need to stretch, stretch, stretch my hamstrings.
It's Staff Appreciation Week this week. Got my slick new HB mug. Love it!

Drove to SF early to take Alice to her medical appointment. Had my morning racquetball meeting at 6 a.m. at Starbuck's. Good meeting with George Holland of the ACLU speaking to us. He was excellent!
Alice and I left for Geary Street around 10. I had lunch at a nearby cafe and picked her up around 1:15. Had the rest of the day off.
Watched Game 4 tonight. Warriors won and advance to the next round.

Oh wow, an amazing session at the Oaks tonight, winning $1,327 in one session. I was up and down the first 4 hours, then in 20 minutes, I had back-to-back pocket tens that both hit sets for +90 and +210, then a limped straddle that I also limped because I knew the button would raise, which he did to $30 followed by five callers, to which I went all in with $800 in chips. Everyone folded unhappily but didn’t dare call my super tight range (I had AQs). Then two hands later, I had AA. I raised $30, two players went all in for $150 and $200, one player called, I went all in, then the caller went all in for around $400. Flop was JJ6, then A, then 5. My boat raked in a near $800 pot. I had a $1900 stack for up $1400 for the night. This is a fun game when you bring home a big pot. I left before midnight but wish I could have stayed longer.

Kicking around an idea that has been percolating in my head these past few weeks: the idea that white males are unexploitable in our society. Just as in poker, the adoption of a cultural strategy to navigate the ins and outs of life renders white males pretty much unexploitable in society. That doesn't mean we're immune from road blocks, unfairness, self-sabotage, derailment, stupidity, trickery, etc. What it does mean is that a white male who's aware of his own privilege and place in our racial hierarchy is a bit like Teflon. I think of myself as evidence in support of this. Number of negative experiences with the police: 0. Number of times I've been profiled: 0. Number of times I've been kicked out of a restaurant, store, town, etc.: 0. I can use every emotion in any situation and rarely if ever suffer any consequences. I can go on and on. It's such a huge advantage in life and yet it's rarely acknowledged or discussed. It's like poker. Knowing these GTO strategies gives me an extra against player who are not using them. They don't know they're playing at a disadvantage, but I do!

Feeling a whole lot better.
Warriors game 4. They lost, creating what is calling the gentlemen's sweep.

I received my second booster yesterday, so feeling very slow and sluggish today. Did have fish and chips at Hook Fish on Irving. After lunch, I took a long nap. Hoping to feel better tomorrow.

A winning session at the Oaks after work, up $466 by the time I left at 11. I had KK, QQ, AQ, AK, most of which held up, especially near the end of my session. In one hand I had QQ and raise $10. Two opps call, then a guy with $130 goes all in. I go all in. He had 77 and I took down the pot. In another hand, I have AK and raise $10, three callers. Flop is A99. I check and opp with position bets $15. Small blind calls and I call. Turn is 4 and Small blind bets $40. I call. Opp in position folds. River is 4. Small blind checks and I bet $100. Small blind folds. Feels good to have a near double-up session.

Dorian and I watched game three of the Warriors Nuggets series at Howard's house. He's not doing well. He'll need to go in for reconstructive surgery on his knee in a few weeks, keeping him at home for months. Yikes.
I brought Star Pizza and salad, which totally hit the spot. The game was thrilling and the Warriors are now 3-0. Looking awesome!

Had dinner at Shakewell with Lisa. Richard was in Canada. We caught up on our lives. This Twitter takeover bid from Elon Musk is concerning. Twitter always felt undervalued so I'm not surprised that a billionaire would scoop it up.

Was hoping to play poker tonight at the Oaks, but I was so busy at work that I didn't make it. Watched the latest episode of High Stakes Poker instead. A couple great hands and a great episode.

Ordered almond croissants at B Patisserie for breakfast, and later in the day for dinner we met Paul and Tron for dinner at their favorite restaurant, Hong's Kitchen on Noriega. They also invited a Russian couple whose names I never got. They were very pleasant, and the food was fantastic. The deep fried special chicken dish with sticky rice inside was the best.

A special treat watching our first Warriors playoff game in a few years. The team did not disappoint!
It was a very special Poole Party!

Took one of my anti-inflammatory pills this morning, meloxicam, and didn't feel right the rest of the day. Headache, tired, out of sorts. Didn't do much of anything the rest of the day.

Back playing racquetball, doubles only. Won all three games in the evening. Nice, but definitely feel it in my knees.
Came home, had dinner, and watched a documentary on Netflix:

Our Hentronix automatic chicken coop door has arrived. I'll install it on Saturday. An expensive add-on, but worth it if it works.

Went to get x-rays on my knees this afternoon and fill an anti-inflammatory prescription at Kaiser, then went to the Oaks for 7.5 hours to play some 1-2-3 cash games. Lost $111. Was up $150 at my highest point, then went card dead for the final 3 hours. KK lost once, though JJ won twice. Still waiting on AA. My cards have not been great at this place in a year and it's tough to exploit any of the situations I'm noticing. I do need to put in more hours though. Practice makes perfect with this game. The other players are always fun to figure out.

Dinner with Soren and Patrick at our place. Alice prepared her delicious ribs. They brought over sparkling wine and three different types of ice cream: Salted Butterscotch, Donuts & Cookies, and Strawberry Lemonaid. So good!

Bonnie's guest Evka leaves for the former Yugoslavia this weekend after staying with Bonnie the past four months. We had a little gathering at 4 this afternoon. Arizmendi pizza, scones, and champagne cocktails. Warm weather and an ideal evening to celebrate.

Almost finished with a long assignment...charts for a big case.
I broke out of a major WSOP app slump where I was around 40Billion in chips. I went from 60billion down to 32 billion and now I'm up to 80Billion. Even though it's just play money, people treat this game much like the real thing, so it's actually good practice to make exploitative plays and try bluffing strategies.

I've been listening to many perspectives on race as a way of forming my own thoughts. It seems there's a natural default setting in America when we're going about our lives and not so focused on race. 22 months after George Floyd, we're back to that default dynamic, back to the priorities of our lives, which for white people means so many topics, priorities, to-do lists, things to buy and read and think about and discuss that have nothing to do with race. It's so easy to do. It's easy to do because race is not an attribute that impacts my life in any way. It's like thinking about air or my feet or the back of my head. They're there, but I don't think about them. Same with race. When I walk out the door, I don't think to myself, "Hmm, I wonder how racism is going to impact my day." These thoughts come to me as I listen to John McWhorter. He would be an interesting person to interview. So would Isabel Wickerson and Jeffrey Robinson.

A big project at work that will take a few days to complete. Watching podcasts on YouTube. So many out there.

Wonderful egg breakfast, thanks to the chickens! Yum yum. Non-stop work day, concluding with a short admin meeting and dinner. Alice bonded with her chickens, did laundry, and set up her Airbnb for her latest guest, who arrived this afternoon. Back to normal over here.

Gary came over for dinner. Austin and Hana were also here. We ordered San Tung chicken wings with green beans and rice. Austin and Hana picked up dessert. It was great hanging out. Too bad Alice's flight home from Hawaii didn't get in until after 8:30. Next time. Alice arrived home a little before 10. She had a great time with her sister. Chicken duty is officially over (for now!).

A day of study, rest, and going out to dinner with Austin. We went to one of his go-to places on Geary, Volcano Curry on Geary. We both ordered the Chicken Katsu Curry with rice. Yup, it's a winner!

Up early, drove to West Portal, took Muni to Embarcadero and BART to 12th Street City Center in Oakland. Met Dorian and Khaled at 7 at the Club and walked across the street where Khaled lives with his mom in the new condo building across from the gym. There's a nice room where we can set up our podcast. Khaled unwrapped the new equipment (mics, camera, stands, sound board). We put together a 30-minute test and the sound was great. The video setup will need a little work. We wrapped up by 9:30 and I headed back to SF to take care of the chickens.
The rest of the day was pretty quiet. Not much going on at work. Sunny and warm outside.
