Saturday morning at Home Depot to pick up fertilizer and soil for the garden. We then spent the rest of the day at home, taking care of small chores. I made cowboy cookies for tomorrow's trip to Olympia.

Very quiet day at work. Miles and I played cribbage at Peets during lunch...picked up a few slices of Arizmendi pizza. Richard joined us for a bit.
The afternoon was mellow. Played 3 hours at the Oaks, up $105. AK twice, QQ once, A5s once. Raised with JT suited but was re-raised out of the pot with two AKs. Would have won that one but the fold was proper. Lots of readable players at the low limit Oaks tables. And lots of players who are making many fundamental errors. One big error is not betting big enough with the nuts. I see many players bet small when they have the best hand, fearing a fold from opponents. Not sure that's good in some spots. I'm winning small pots, not so much big pots yet.

Racquetball from 6-7:30, then a solid day of work while studying a few post-flop concepts. Petty Zoom tonight so no Oaks action. I'll play tomorrow night.
Read another chapter of How the Word is Passed. This books' packed with quotes, history, the American experience. Really good.

I saw this sports documentary at the Grand Lake Theater with Dorian. It was powerful. There are endless stories about racism, oppression, denying the rights of people of color, especially in my parents' generation and my generation. Dorian is a case study of a gifted athlete who was marginalized and cut out of so many opportunities because of his race. Watching this together was very powerful.
So many stories stood out, but listening to the stories of long distance runner Billy Mills and golfer Bill Wright really hit home. Very powerful evening. So glad I was able to share it with D.

Got to play some cribbage with Miles and Maddy at Peets today while working online. They're hanging out in the hood the next few weeks, enjoying their summer between graduation and entering adult life with full-time jobs, monthly bills, etc. I love these two and especially love how much they enjoy playing crib. We played a couple three-handed games, then I let them play together while taking care of some emails and small jobs.
After work, I studied a few poker scenarios. Hope to play Thursday and Friday night.

PowerPoint took most of the morning, then smaller jobs took most of the afternoon. No time to study.

Spent the day catching up on this journal. I'd gotten behind and needed to catch up.

Spent the afternoon in Oakland at Howard and Leslie's with Alice, Dorian and Debbie, and Howard's brother Michael and his wife Tina. Great afternoon hanging out with friends. Made cowboy cookies and banana bread for dessert.

Made cowboy cookies for tomorrow's party at Howards. Busy day at work, but all caught up. Continued studying.

Another session at the Oaks and still card dead. Had an unlucky hand with AK suited, A57 flop, 6 turn, 5 on river. Opp had J5 and made a sizable bet on the river that I called. Did hit a set at one point for a nice pot, but other than that, my luck was not with me tonight.

Played for 4.5 hours at the Oaks tonight. Card dead and whatever hands I had were smashed by inferior hands that caught up on the river.

Dinner with Ron and Jeni tonight at Osha Thai at Embarcadero. Great catching up with them!

Back at work, and I had tons to take care of. But I also had the last 75 pages to read before 4 p.m.
Luckily, I was able to finish just before our book club started at 4.
Reyna Grande, the author of The Distance Between Us, joined us for the book club discussion. She was wonderful. What a marvelous writer and person. I so enjoyed listening to her share her story of immigrating to the US from Mexico. I thought a lot about my own immigration story from Canada while reading her book. Needless to say, her struggles were so much more intense and dangerous than mine. Great book and book club!

Up at 6:30 and off to the airport by 8:15 for my 9:45 flight home. The flight was full and delayed, but eventually I made it back to Oakland safe and sound.
Once I was home, I went to sleep. And slept the entire day.

Thursday ended up being a very good poker day. We played at the Wynn, Resorts World, and Venetian. I won at all three poker rooms. At the Wynn, I got lucky, catching a flush after going all in for +$300. At Resorts World, I had AA against KK and a drawing hand, making $400. And at the Venetian, I was up $240.
Dinner was at a beer tasting bar |
